Samsara

France, India, Italy, Germany 2002 | 138 minutes | Ladakh | Hebrew subtitles

After three years of solitary meditation, a young Buddhist monk discovers that his sexual drive is alive and well. He decides that to properly renounce the world of the physical senses he must first experience it. He marries a young peasant girl, becomes a farmer, and begins to experience all of the joys and hardships of the physical world. A mature and thoughtful film by self-taught Indian filmmaker Nalin Pan, Samsara moves between the comic and the serious, the sensual and the spiritual. Filmed in CinemaScope, the camera caresses the peaks of the Himalayas, making for a truly sensual viewing experience.
