Karin's mother dies. Her father is in debt to the mafia and leaves Karin with her grandfather. Karin is sad, and her grandfather's cat Anzu is no help. Anzu is no ordinary cat; he walks on two and is verbal, but he is still a cat – lazy and tactless. The best he can do to make Karin feel better is to arrange a meeting with her deceased mother. Ghost Cat Anzu does not try to sugarcoat the film's themes. The animation combines illustration with a rotoscope to capture the characters' expressions, and the combination of humor and sentiment adds up to a work similar in its features to the cat at its center: funny, peculiar, and extremely satisfying.
