Unzere Kinder

Poland 1946 | 80 minutes | Yiddish | Hebrew subtitles

The children of the Helnovak Orphanage in Poland are taken to a Yiddish Theater performance. The show is a musical on ghetto life by comic duo Djigan and Schumacher, who have returned to Poland after having spent the War years in Russia. But the children, who experienced the ghetto first-hand, see the play as a distortion of the terrible truth. They cause a commotion which brings the play to a halt. The actors are invited to the orphanage to learn the "true story." During the day, the duo entertains the children; at night, they are shown the nightmare world of children who cannot erase the memories. A poignant mixture of comic and tragic, Nathan Gross's film is as much a tribute to the indomitable strength of the human spirit, as a testimony of human suffering.
