Tom Ripley, a young American with big dreams, is sent to Europe to retrieve a spoiled millionaire playboy. When the errand fails, Ripley stays around and inserts himself into the playboy's life. Minghella's adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's novel (the second film adaptation, after "Plein Soleil" with Alain Delon), is an adept reconstruction of the 1950s and the spirit of the novel, its many nuances adding significance to every frame.
