Hilma

Sweden 2022 | 120 minutes | English | Hebrew subtitles

Hilma af Klint is an example of the wrong place and wrong time. Born in 1862 in Sweden, Hilma became a pioneering artist that was recognized decades after her death. Preceding well-known artists, such as Kandinsky, Malevich, and Mondrian, she invented an abstract artistic language embedded in nature. Masterful director, Lasse Hallström, presents an extensive biography of the artist, from her youth in a traditional family, through her art studies far away from the public eye, to her spiritual awakening following the death of her beloved sister, and the development of her unique language that includes massive and works bursting with color. Hilma explores how philosophy, mysticism, and spiritualism influenced her life and work, as well as, her uncompromising love for life. With compassion and acceptance that Hilma never received in life, Hellström invites the viewer to be swept away into a vibrant world of symbols, shapes, and colors.
