Undercurrent

Japan 1956 | 104 minutes | Japanese | Hebrew, English subtitles

Kiwa creates handmade kimono and tie designs. Her father, textile factory owner, wishes to see her wed. Kiwa rejects all her admirers as her heart belongs to a scientist whose wife is dying. Undercurrent is an unsentimental melodrama in which the female character tries, similar to the patterns of her designs, to navigate her life outside social conventions and boxes. In this female and social portrait of Japan post-WWII, the tensions between tradition and progress and between softness and candor are presented as a striking work that will make your eyes and heart tremble.
