It takes three generations of random encounters for Sarah to meet Simon. This winding road is depicted by Claude Lelouch as a short history of the 20th century: WWI and WWII, the Fourth and Fifth Republics. Sarah’s part is the story of French Jewry from the holocaust to financial success and the support of Israel. Simon’s side is the story of cinema. Lelouch makes huge strides here, demonstrating a clear control of cinematic styles and not shying away from intense brushstrokes that give the film a surprising dramatic and emotional volume.
