Ernst Lubitsch's brilliant and cynical comedy was produced in the middle of WWII, and to this day, its razor-sharp humor is still astounding. The film follows a theater group from Warsaw as they put on a play about the Nazis and get into a lot of trouble with the German invasion of Poland. From here on, a quick-paced and entertaining comedy develops, full of role-exchanges, in which Jews, Poles, Nazis, and spies take part. To Be or Not to Be is a hilarious and ingenious film that rightly deserves its classic status.
