Two years ago, we showcased Kurdwin Ayub's debut film at the Austrian Film Week, which cleverly explored the tension between cultures in Vienna. In her second film, Ayub approaches these same questions from the opposite direction. This time, her protagonist, Sarah, a martial arts trainer, travels to Amman, Jordan, to train three sisters. Despite the ideal conditions, something is amiss: the sisters are uninterested in sports, and the villa they reside in is isolated, guarded by a strict security team. Ayub proves herself once again as a sharp director, guiding us from a realistic portrayal into the realms of horror and thriller, where she challenges social conventions and cultural norms. This film has become one of the most talked-about releases of the fall, since its premiere at the recent Locarno Festival.
