Pygmalion

UK 1939 | 90 minutes | English | Hebrew subtitles

Professor Higgins, a respectable English gentleman, teaches Eliza Doolittle, a cockney flower girl, how to use the English language properly and become a refined lady. Long before "My Fair Lady," Asquith and Howard directed Shaw's "Pygmalion" in a much more faithful adaptation. The elegant direction and relaxed performances reveal the wonderful dialogue and the ambivalence that inhabits the two main characters. The end result is a charming comedy that, like many of Asquith's works, directly addresses class distinctions in English society.
