Kristian

Czechoslovakia 1939 | 96 minutes | Czech | Hebrew subtitles

Kristian is a regular at the Orient nightclub. Every monthly visit, he makes a move on one of the women, showering her with his charm and wealth for a captivating romantic experience. But one evening something goes wrong with his usual moves, and his whole world turns upside down. Kristian is a classic of Czech cinema for numerous reasons. Firstly, the triumphant execution: the elegant design and costumes, the camerawork that closely captures the drama, the soundtrack that intensifies the emotion. But chiefly, it is the wonderfully witty script. The plot progresses in an engineered column of comic scenes, and along the way, it is impossible not to be intrigued as to just how this singular plot will advance. But beyond that, the film deals with the most basic human problems and solves them beautifully and heartfeltly. In many ways, Kristian is reminiscent of Lubitsch's best films and is most worthy of your attention.
