Flying Classroom

West Germany 1954 | 92 minutes | German | Hebrew subtitles

Kästner himself wrote the adaptation of his adventure book and left the plot almost unchanged. As in previous adaptations, he knows how to keep the happenings and dialogues fresh. The plot takes place in a boarding school for boys, and at its center is a play written by one of them, a lonely boy abandoned by his parents. The play is called "The Flying Classroom" and describes the students' journey to the places they study in school. The combination of fiction and reality allows the kids to face the challenges in their lives: loneliness and a sense of insecurity. Kurt Hoffmann's direction extracts natural performances from his young cast and the result is a fluid and enjoyable cinematic work.
