My Best Friend

My Best Friend

France 2006 | 95 minutes | French | Hebrew subtitles

When we first meet François, he is attending the funeral of a colleague, an antique dealer. Not out of respect for the dead but out of a desire to get his hands on new merchandise. At his birthday party, his friends tell him exactly what they think of him and his tendency to value objects over people. His partner in the antique shop, Catherine, challenges him: come back in ten days with a real friend or hand over the precious Greek urn you just bought. The task proves impossible until François asks a chatty taxi driver to teach him how to make friends. With Patrice Leconte, there is always a chasm between the main characters that he seeks to bridge. Here, he deals directly with the question of the secrets of human relationships and does so with a light and self-confident touch. With crystal cinematography and actors who give their all, the result is a great French comedy.
