Magic Moments of Music: Menuhin & Karajan Play Mozart

Germany 2023 | 52 minutes | English, German | Hebrew, English subtitles

1966 saw a coming together of two iconic artists: Herbert von Karajan and Yehudi Menuhin. One a celebrated star conductor from Germany, the other the "violinist of the century" and son of Russian-Jewish immigrants from New York. Their collaboration culminated in a burst of artistic genius, giving us a unique moment of musical history, when performing Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5 with the Wiener Symphoniker. Recorded and directed by award-winning feature film director Henri-Georges Clouzot, the concert is a visual as well as musical treat and shows how their contrasting biographies serve only to accentuate this spellbinding musical moment. Today, the disarming power of their playing and music resonates as strongly as ever.

International stars from the music scene, including Anne-Sophie Mutter, Daniel Hope and Hillary Hahn as well as major figures from the cinematographic world such as Sunnyi Melles, August Zirner and Bruno Monsaingeon tell of their captivation with this unique recording of the sole collaboration between the two music legends. Together, we experience how their ideals of sound gave rise to timeless beauty and artistry – and how music can still contribute to reconciliation today.
