The Thin Line

Israel 1980 | 84 minutes | Hebrew

12-year-old Maya is sent to a kibbutz whilst Nili, her younger sister, is left at home with her parents. Her mother’s (Gila Almagor) behaviour has become increasingly erratic as of late. Her violent mood swings are frequent and her mental state, worryingly fragile. At a certain point, Nili is also sent to live in the kibbutz whilst the mother is sectioned without her eldest daughter’s knowledge. Michal Bat-Adam’s 1980 film is a moving drama about the inner workings of sanity and mental health, as seen through the eyes of a young girl.
