The Tank Battalion

Czechoslovakia 1991 | 83 minutes | Czech | Hebrew, English subtitles

A comedy typical of Czech cinema in the tradition of mocking militarism and frameworks. The film is an adaptation of the books by Josef Skvorecký, based on his experiences as a soldier in the 1950s under the infamous defense minister of communist Czechoslovakia, Alexej Čepička. While training in a closed military zone, Danny copes with the situation through thoughts of civilian life, food, women, and alcohol. The film was a hysterical hit when it was released right after the fall of Communism.
