The beginning of the 20th century. After 10 years in London, young Devdas returns to his family's estate. There he becomes reaquainted with the neighbors' daughter. They want to marry but his family disapproves. From here unfolds a series of tragedies, in which Devdas winds up alcoholic and in the arms of a prostitute. Based on a novel written almost a century ago, "Devdas" has already been adapted nine times to the cinema, and at least one of these adaptations is considered to be of the classics of Indian cinema. The present film is a Bollywood production par excellence, with song, dance and melodramatic "Romeo and Juliet" plot - the first Bollywood film to enter the competition at Cannes.
