After kissing their girlfriends goodbye for the summer, Tenoch and Julio go out searching for adventures. At Tenoch's older brother's wedding, they meet Luisa, ten years their elder, and invite her on a trip to a mystical (and made-up) beach paradise. Within a few days, both boys have slept with and fallen for Luisa, creating the tension that follows the threesome on a road trip through the wild landscapes of Mexico toward the sea. Alfonso Cuarón's best film takes the coming-of-age genre - about the joy of life and direct sexuality - and through it presents a melancholic portrait of a generation and of Mexico itself. All of Cuarón's cinematic wisdom is present here - the relaxed camera, the natural acting, the use of narration – that allows him to maneuver our feelings with a combination of empathy and irony, mockery and compassion.
