A Man

Japan 2022 | 121 minutes | Japanese | Hebrew subtitles

When Rie's husband unexpectedly dies, she discovers she never truly knew him. Her lawyer sets out to uncover this man's past and his demons. A Man could have gone the way of a detective film, but Kei Ishikawa directs it to questions of identity and belonging in Japanese society. His cinematic abilities allow him to change the course of the film, to step between the drama and tension, and focus on the human motivations that actuate his heroes. The result, screened at the 2022 Venice Film Festival, is an immersive drama exploring the ability to know oneself and others.
