A semi-retired lawyer is hired by a soldier accused of murdering the man that sexually attacked his wife. Otto Preminger stages an excellent courtroom drama that in 1959 presented several groundbreaking scenes in the way sex and violence were treated on screen and captures the spirit of the 1950s: the tension between conservatism and permissiveness and the way female liberty was perceived by society. Exceptional performances by the cast, James Stewart as a determined defense attorney and Lee Remick in a soul-baring performance, are the empathetic center of this classic.
