Urga

Russia, France 1991 | 120 minutes | Russian, Mongolian | Hebrew, English subtitles

An urga is a lasso used by the shepherd to collar sheep but also a symbol of love-making and fertility. This "delightful and charming film" (Variety) - the winner of the Golden Bear at the 1991 Venice Film Festival - is the story of the encounter between an ignorant shepherd from Inner Mongolia who goes to town to look for contraceptives, and the friendly but loud-mouthed Russian truck driver whom he meets on his way.
