Ling, a young woman of Malaysian origin residing in Singapore, is married to a local businessman and teaches high school Mandarin. Her life is a series of ongoing frustrations; she has been trying to get pregnant for eight years while caring for her wheelchair-bound father-in-law. As if this weren’t enough, she is not exactly valued at her school. Only one student, Wei Lun, finds interest in his lessons. Like his teacher, he too has difficulty fitting in and his parents are never around to care for him. A warm friendship is forged between the two, but the relationship takes an unexpected turn. Anthony Chen, whose first film, Ilo Ilo (2013) was awarded the Camera D’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, continues to establish himself as one of Singapore’s principal cinematic voices through a thoughtful, intimate, and sensitive film which was the recipient of numerous awards.
