Marcello manages a dog boarding facility in a poor Neapolitan suburb. He is hard-working, modest, loved. But another, rather dubious, job leads him to a subjugating relationship with Simone, a retired boxer who wreaks havoc through the entire region. Matteo Garrone (Gomorra) adapts a universal (and true), story about suffering and unfulfilled dreams. This dark and poignant spaghetti Western of sorts is about an eternal victim who strives to change his life after years of subordination. Matching Garrone’s meticulous direction, is the remarkable cinematography, including intense close-ups and surreal underwater sequences, and Marcelo Fonte’s superb performance for which he won the Best Actor Award at Cannes.
