The Jerusalem Cinematheque is honoring the tenth anniversary of Lia van Leer's passing with "LiaFest," an annual program that celebrates her lasting legacy and her pioneering role as a woman in the world of cinema. This special program highlights films that explore themes of female empowerment, the transformative power of women in driving cultural and social change, and the diverse experiences that shape their lives. The carefully curated selection of films embodies the resilience, creativity, and courage of women throughout history and today—qualities that were central to Lia's spirit.
Lia van Leer was the force behind the development of Israeli film culture and became the face of Israeli cinema on the international stage. In 1955, alongside her life partner, Wim, she founded the Film Club in Haifa, which eventually became the Israeli Film Archive. In the 1970s, she established the Haifa Cinematheque, played a pivotal role in the creation of the Tel Aviv Cinematheque, and later founded the Jerusalem Cinematheque. In 1984, Lia also launched Israel’s first international film festival. She led the Jerusalem Cinematheque until 2008 and remained its president until her passing. Lia received widespread international recognition and remains an inspiring role model for all who followed in her footsteps at the Cinematheque.
