When a petty thief is caught and sent to jail on Christmas Eve in New York, the prosecutor takes pity and decides to release her on bail. They will spend Christmas traveling to his family in Indiana and fall in love. "Love reformed her and corrupted him" is how screenwriter Preston Sturges defined this romantic comedy. This comedy, also possessing melancholy and resignation, marks the first of several collaborations between Stanwyck and MacMurray. The duo draws a portrait of a love that never finds its place.
