A detective is sent to Sicily to investigate the murder of a truck driver. The probe leads the detective to a woman who was or was not the driver's mistress and the local mafia kingpin. One of the greatest hits of Italian cinema of the 1960s examines the connection between the Mafia and the social fabrics within which it operates.
