Documentary filmmaker Robert Bober recreates the memories of his great-grandfather, who lived in Vienna, alongside the Viennese intelligentsia. Upon re-familiarizing himself with the works of Stefan Zweig, Joseph Roth, Arthur Schnitzler, and Sigmund Freud, among others, Robert Bober, today aged 82, rediscovers his personal history and identity. The texts evoke the collapse of the Hapsburg Empire and the birth and rise to power of National Socialism, up to the Anschluss that would bring an end to Vienna as the cultural capital of Europe.
